Ahmet Duran Şahin, PhD

Ahmet Duran Şahin finished undergraduate program at Meteorology Department of İstanbul Technical University (ITU) in 1994 and graduated to MSc. and PhD. at Atmospheric Science Program of Science and Technology Institute of ITU in 1996 and 2002 respectively. He also attended a post doctorial research program at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in Canada between 2004 and 2005. Because of his high-impact scientific researches, he was awarded by the Research and Technology Council of Turkey, TÜBİTAK in 2006. His main research areas could be divided into two parts, one of them atmospheric sciences-renewable energy sources that include wind energy, solar energy, wind-solar hybrid systems, exergy, climate, climate change and the other one is statistical-mathematical modelling that includes spatial models, temporal models, risk analysis, spatio-temporal models, geostatistic, fuzzy logic and neural networks.

Prof. Dr. Ahmet Duran Şahin has been the Head of the Meteorological Engineering Department and the Board Member of the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics since 2012. He served as a member of the Board of the Istanbul Technical University Institute of Science and Technology between 2014 and 2020

Vice Dean

Ahmet Öztopal, PhD
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Öztopal was born in Balıkesir, Turkey, in 1974. He graduated from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) with a degree in Meteorological Engineering in 1996. He obtained his master's degree in 1998 and his doctoral degree in 2007 from the Department of Meteorological Engineering at ITU. In 2009, he worked as a visiting scientist at The Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and Climate (ISAC), which is part of the National Research Council (CNR) in Italy.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Öztopal's research interests include satellite and radar meteorology, climate change, renewable energy (wind and solar energy), and modern methods in science such as fuzzy logic, genetic algorithms, and artificial neural networks.

Currently, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Öztopal serves as the Vice Chair of the Department of Meteorological Engineering and a member of the Board of Directors at the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics at ITU. He is married and has two children.

Burcu Yıldız Ataş, PhD
Burcu Yıldız Ataş completed her undergraduate studies in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Boğaziçi University. She completed her master's and doctoral studies in the Music program at Istanbul Technical University's Advanced Music Research Center (MIAM), specializing in ethnomusicology. From 2007 to 2010, she served as a lecturer in the Sensory Design Program at Yıldız Technical University. Burcu Yıldız received the title of Associate Professor in 2014 and has been teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in musicology and ethnomusicology at ITU Turkish Music State Conservatory and ITU Graduate School of Social Sciences in Turkey since 2010. Her main research areas include ethnicity, identity, cultural memory, migration, diaspora, and gender within the scope of music studies. Her book titled "Experiencing Armenian Music in Turkey: An Ethnography of Musicultural Memory" was published by Ergon-Verlag in Germany. She has also published research projects such as the book "Kalbim O Viran Evlere Benzer: Gomidas Vartabed's Musical Legacy," the documentary film "Garod: A Longing Story from America to Diyarbakır," and the album "Yerkaran." In 2016-2017, she continued her research on "The Draft Records of the Ottoman Diaspora in America" at the City University of New York. Her vocal performances have been featured in various soundtrack albums for films and TV series in Turkey. Her debut solo album "O Günler" was released in 2019.

Mahmut Altınbaş, PhD
Dr. Mahmut Altınbaş is an Environmental Engineer with academic and professional experience in environmental and energy projects since 2000. His main areas of expertise include anaerobic biotechnology, algae biotechnology, solid waste treatment technologies, bioenergy and ecology, biohydrogen production, membrane separation technology, and sludge disposal technologies. He specializes in the entire process of converting waste into high-value products, starting from planning to process selection and design. He is also the Director of the ITU Center for Sustainable Energy and a member of the National Research Center for Membrane Technologies.Dr. Mahmut Altınbaş is an Environmental Engineer with academic and professional experience in environmental and energy projects since 2000. Abdussamet Subaşı, PhD

Abdussamet Subaşı received his bachelor's degrees in Mechanical Engineering and Electrical-Electronics Engineering from Atatürk University in 2008 and 2009, respectively. He obtained his master's and doctoral degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Atatürk University and Istanbul Technical University (ITU) in 2010 and 2017, respectively. As part of his doctoral studies, he conducted research at the Institute of Aerodynamics and Gas Dynamics (IAG) at the University of Stuttgart for one year between 2014 and 2015. From 2019 to 2020, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering at Rennes 1 University for six months. His main research areas include Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), flow control, transition to turbulence, nano-fluids, enhancement of heat transfer, machine learning, optimization, and the application of multi-criteria decision making to heat and flow phenomena.

He worked as a Research Assistant from 2010 to 2017 and has been serving as a faculty member at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at ITU since December 2017. In February 2021, he was appointed as the Vice Director of the Graduate Education Institute at ITU.

Vice Dean

Burak Kulga, PhD

Dr. Burak Kulga holds Ph.D. Degree (2014) and M.Sc. Degree (2010) from Penn State University and a B.S. Degree from METU Ankara (2004), all in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering. He also holds an M.S. degree in Energy Science and Technology from Istanbul Technical University (2010). His research work consisted of numerical modeling and reservoir simulations in oil and gas reservoirs as well as geothermal reservoirs, His research area also includes carbon dioxide sequestration in geological formations and machine learning applications in oil and gas industry.

He joined İTU family on September 9, 2019. His academic experiences include working as an assistant professor at Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Department of Near East University and teaching and research assistant at Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering Department of Penn State University. He worked as a reservoir simulation engineer at Pusula R&D, a company that focuses on geothermal projects and investments in Turkey and Eastern Africa. He also worked as a production and stimulation engineer at Schlumberger in the USA; as a reservoir simulation engineer at Chevron in the USA; and as a production engineer at PEMI (now TransAtlantic Petroleum) in Turkey. His industry experience includes a wide range of activities including supervising production and drilling operations in East and Southeast part of Turkey, designing hydraulic fracture operations and fluids for shale reservoirs in Ohio, Colorado and Wyoming, uncertainty analysis and probabilistic forecasts for reservoir simulation models, development of full-field geothermal reservoir models, and analysis of geothermal well tests.


Secretary of Graduate School

Mustafa Özkartal

Mustafa Özkartal was born in 1974 in Yıldızeli district of Sivas. After completing his primary, secondary and high school education in Sivas, he accomplished his higher education at Atatürk University Erzincan Vocational High School between 1992 and 1994. Subsequent to his higher education, he completed his military service between 1995 and 1997. He started working in Istanbul Technical University in November 1997; and in 1998, he was assigned in Student Affairs Department of Institute of Science. While continuing his employment at İTU, he successfully completed his higher education in Department of Economics at Anadolu University Open Education Faculty between 2001 and 2005. During his assignment in the Institute of Science, he took parts in student information processing, student affairs, student military service procedures, occupational health and safety commission and graduate student orientation processes. Mustafa Özkartal currently holds the position of Secretary of the Graduate School, and he is married with two children.
